Want to really crush those 2018 goals? Do this first.

Who else has noticed that BIG, beautiful moon in the sky this week? It’s one of two full moons that we’ll have this month. The one you saw last night and will see again tonight is very special. It’s a super moon and lies in the sign of Cancer. Cancer represents self-care, intuition and nurture. It is the perfect time to tune in and take care of your mind, body and spirit as move into 2018.

Full moons are always a time of releasing and letting go. And although some of you brave souls might be plunging head first into your New Year resolutions this moon is reminding us to first let go of 2017’s past. We are being asked to cleanse and release anything that prevents us from loving and taking care of ourselves fully.

We’ve been programmed to think that as soon as the New Year rolls around we need to jump onto the goal setting train, start new habits and begin to live our lives in a newfound way. All of this is great in theory, but it’s almost impossible to start something new if you’re still holding on to the past. We need to pluck out those old patterns, thoughts and ways of being to make space for the new that is to come. Enter: Full Moon in Cancer.

Last night I created my own little ritual to begin the process of cleansing some old beliefs that I’ve been carrying with me for a long time. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it served me in a big way. I thought I would share with you. And please know that you can do this at ANY time, not only during a full moon. Access this ritual when it most serves YOU. Are you ready?

Things you will need:

Quiet room

Pen and paper

Sage (optional)

Lighter or matches (optional)

  1. Find a spot where you can get quiet and sit comfortably. Dim the lights if possible and take a few deep, cleansing breaths in and out with your eyes closed. After several rounds of open mouth exhales, close your lips and find your breath moving in and out of your nose. Let your body start to soften.

  2. Stay quiet. Keep breathing. If the mind shifts from the breath, bring it gently back. Do this for several moments.

  3. Ask yourself: What is keeping me from moving forward? What do I need to let go of? What am I holding onto that is no longer serving me? What are my limiting beliefs about myself? (anything else you feel called to ask… ASK.)

  4. With your eyes closed see what answers start to come up. Keep breathing. Stay quiet. FEEL.

  5. Gently open your eyes and write down everything that came to you. Everything you’re ready to let go of, write down. Get it out. Once you’re complete, read what you just wrote and take a minute to sit with it.

  6. Light your sage (feel free to skip this step) and start smudging around your head and then move onto your whole body: your throat, heart space, belly and seat. You can also smudge around the paper you wrote on.

  7. And finally… time to rid yourself of all of this heaviness. You have two options here: Rip out your page(s) and fiercely shred them into pieces OR for a more intense and dramatic effect burn that sh*t!! ((Guys, please be safe if you’re opting for the fire!!))

  8. Once your shredding and/or burning is complete close your eyes once more and breathe into the expansion that you have just created. Now, open your eyes and start creating some magic.
